not quite a FLIP..but as a personal device worth considering - iPodNANO with video

too small for student hands IMHO
but spectacular capacity.

take 4hours video VGA (640x480)
standard definition eg DVD quality

with HD definition need blueray to playback the quality to a HD LCD or plasma screen..or just play out of the computer to the screen (or HD projector!)

The nano will play out to a projector or screen in composite video and sound. Audio out on the FLIP needs work.

the other place to go for FLIP info

rumours are getting stonger that the next iPod Touch will have a camera with video capabilit¥

'only' VGA - 640x480 ( about 0.3MP) but identical to FLIP Ultra

The newer FLIP HD offers 720p (1280x720) and can record 2h
(4GB per hour)

the VGA quality takes 2GB per hour, so the Touch has 16GB capacity...several hours depending on other Apps

release?...expected in time for new US school year September 1st
( also a new financial quarter!!)

Over the past few weeks I have been watching the Film Riot podcast http://www.revision3.com/filmriot/ if you looking for some great ideas for teaching simple and basic special effects that you can go with the flip cameras and maybe some free software like Wax2.0... then check out Film Riot ...

***HINT*** You will have to watch each video first before using them in class to make sure the ones you are using are age appropriate.. As there are some nice blood/gunshot efftects some may wish to avoid..

i had a chance to see the new minoHD chrome last week and the new UtlraHD

both look great!

the ultrHD has the option of either doubleA batteries or a re-chargeable from the USB connection.

excellent idea gives flexibility to download to a netbook and recharge by swapping batteries when out and about..the drain on the netbook is not recommended.

check out edsoft.com.au for details

I've not got my hands on a flip yet, but boy I would like to.
I can see how a class set of flips could revolutionize the curriculum.

possibly quicktime pro (winXP/VISTA/OS X), unless you have a mac where iMovie has it built in...

$25AUD at apple.com.au

this will allow conversion to/from
avi/mov/m4v/wmv

the m4v is particularly important for ipods-touch/iphone
assuming you want to play or stream the file rather than just compress for sending (eg .zip)
movies do not compress particularly well beyond a MB per min
so 10MB = ten minutes
the screen size needs to be reduced at that file size as the resolution has been reduced as well
320x240 works OK
160x120 starting to be a bit small, though OK for blogs/wikis

What is the best way to compress and reduce the file size of the videos? I have a 30 min file that is over 1gb.
